I was born in New York, N.Y. in 1953. Riding the Cyclone is the story of my first eighteen years.

After high school, I went to Reed College in Portland, Oregon, taught English as a second language in Japan, then studied linguistics, first at Brown, then at the University of Pennsylvania.

In September, 1978, proudly clutching my nearly useless master’s degree, I returned to Portland, Oregon to see if I could grow up again—the right way this time…
